Top 10 Zombie Movies 2012

April 17th, 2012

Year after year, whether it’s comic books, video games, movies, or even TV shows, there is a sprawling, bloody fever of zombie fanaticism on the rise that may not have even yet reached it’s peak (we should be so lucky!). As zombie movies grow into a bigger trend of pop culture, whether you like it or not, you are undoubtedly a fan of zombies if you’ve enjoyed even just 10% of the horror movies that have come out in the past few years. This year, quite a few are set for release, so we’ve put together this list of the top 10 zombie movie 2012 for you to get excited about…and drool over…and growl over…and possibly decapitate your neighbor with your teeth over..

The list of Top 10 Zombie Movies 2012

  1. World War Z
  2. Warm Bodies
  3. The Zombie King
  4. Resident Evil 5: Retribution
  5. REC 3: Apocalypse (Spain)
  6. R.I.P.D.
  7. Deadlands III: The New World
  8. A Little Bit Zombie (Canada)
  9. Another World (Israel)
  10. Archaic Redemption

#10 “World War Z”

Starting at number ten on our top 10 zombie movies 2012 list is World War Z, not because we think it’ll suck, but because it is actually not going to be released in 2012 anymore — we found out that Paramount is planning on releasing World War Z on June 21st, 2013 but we left it in our top 10 zombie movies 2012 list because there is still going to be considerably more talk and interest in it over the rest of the year. Read on to find out why..

Based on the popular novel of the same name by Max Brooks from 2006, this is a story of the survivors who have been suffering for 10 years after the human victory over the world wide zombie epidemic which is known as World War Z. Compared with other zombie movies, “World War Z”  focuses on the views, behaviour, and mentality of the survivors who are facing the end of the world at the helm of a new zombie terror.

world war z

The movie has a lot of anticipation due to its array of male celebrities including Bradd Pitt in the lead role, Mathew Fox, David Morse, Bryan Cranston, Elyes Gabel from Game of Thrones among others. It was originally suppsoed to have Mathew Fox as the lead role, so there have been some casting changes. Probably the most notable production issue that has come about was when the production team ran into a major problem in Budapest, Hungary back in Oct 2011 because they brought fully operational weapons into the country without permission and had false documentation for them — they somehow managed to get the charges dropped by making it impossible for the authorities to prove who actually owned the guns.. Yea..

Nevertheless, the movie was originally slated for release on  December 21, 2012, the day the world is supposed to end (dun dun dun!) but is now pushed back to Jun 21, 2013. Will we be around to see it?

#9 “Warm Bodies”

top10zombiemovies.net/warm_bodies 2012

top10zombiemovies.net/warm_bodies 2012

Another movie that was supposed to be released this year and thus made the top 10 zombie movies 2012 list is the story that is based on Isaac Marion’s novel Warm Bodies which is a longer version sequel of his own quirky zombie short story called I am a Zombie Filled with Love. Summit entertainment business gets Jonathan Levine (who is also directing “The Wackness” and “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane”) to be the movie director of “Warm Bodies”. top 10 zombie movie 2012 The story is about a zombie named “R” falls in love with a 19 years old girl, Julie whose boyfriend got killed by “R” and another zombie “M”. The power of love causes a series chain reaction. It not only breaks the forbidden relationship between zombies and human beings, but also changes the whole world. They claimed that this movie will be a zombie version of “Twilight” — let’s hope it isn’t…

#8 The Zombie King

A movie that actually IS slated to release in 2012, the Zombie King stars lost actors Edward Furlong and Cory Feldman in a British production being called a “horror comedy”, which I’m not sure is a good thing or a bad thing. Directed by Aidan Belizaire, this movie is the first of Northern Girl Productions.

#7 Resident Evil 5: Retribution

#6 “REC 3: Apocalypse (Spain)

#5 R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D.

Based on a graphic novel, this story is about a young man, Nick Walker, who gets killed while on duty as a police officer and then subsequently becomes part of a whole team of zombie cops. Yes, a team of zombie cops. You heard me right. They work for the Rest In Peace Department and Nick tries to find his killer — almost like The Crow but less gothy and more ridiculous. Looks like a great addition to the top 10 zombie movies 2012 list.

#4 Deadlands III: The New World

#3 “A Little Bit Zombie (Canada)

A Little Bit Zombie

#2 – “Another World (Israel)”

How many zombie movies from Israel are there? Let’s give this one a shot and see what they can come up with.

#1 – Archaic Redemption

From director Anthony Brownrigg, this upcoming zombie film makes it to #1 on the list of top 10 zombie movies 2012 for a couple reasons: one is because it’s based on a Second Life roleplaying game that takes place in Necroville, a post-apocolyptic town in Second Life, which is breaking ground in the world of movie making. While many movies have been based on role playing games and computer games, none have yet been based on a virtual reality game like Second Life. Most of the players of the game actually spend real money on virtual products and services offered by the game and other players. Second Life, being what it is, already crosses the virtual world with the real world in this way, but making a movie based on a subculture of Second Life presents both challenges and innovation to movie making that we hope to see here.

The second reason it’s ground-breaking, and deserving of the #1 spot on our list of Top 10 Zombie Movies 2012 is said best from Brownrigg himself in an interview: “It’s a different view on the undead. They’re not mindless, they know what they were, who they are.” The staple zombie archetype is of a braindead moron who craves human flesh and the CoLA crew really created a new type of society where the undead “live” among everyone else.

The story is about a young man who must brave an undead gang in the efforts to find his sister in the post apocalyptic world of Lost Angels. While there hasn’t been much discussion about its completion or release for a while, there has been test footage and interviews released, see below:

7 Reasons Why The Walking Dead Is The Best Zombie “Movie” Yet

March 28th, 2012

the walking dead

I know, it’s not technically a movie, but these days the production value on cable TV is easily comparable, and while modern cable shows can still have a sort of soap opera-esque quality to them, they manage to break new ground in both TV and film innovation.  Add zombies to that and, well, you manage to make a geek like me swoon a little bit.

When The Walking Dead first came out, I never heard of the comic before, but having grown up reading comics and watching horror films, I admired the newer, more serious and seemingly cross-genre comics that I started to notice when I first entered middle school. From Sandman to The Crow, there seemed to be this more artistic, less cartoony era emerging. It wasn’t long after I graduated high school that The Walking Dead hit the shelves and comic book aficionados took to its gritty, stark and bitter story line as one of the comic book world’s best new series. Today, cable channel AMC has managed to do it some serious justice and we’d like to point out why it’s quickly become the best Zombie “movie” of all time in 10 simple points.

7. It’s the first and only TV show about zombies. There simply have never been any tv shows about zombie before. Vampires, yes. But zombies? No. Breaking new ground gives The Walking Dead a spot at the top before it even starts.

6.  There are barely any zombie stories attempting to be serious that can avoid becoming campy. Let’s face it: zombies are generally funny. Maybe back in the 1940s they were scary, but since then they’ve gone through an evolution that has spanned the spectrum from pure horror to pure ridiculousness. Probably the most serious it had ever been was Night of the Living Dead. But the most campy it has ever gotten (and possibly the most outlandishly gory) was Dead Alive. After some attempts at real drama in more recent films such as newer George A Ramero movies and 28 Days Later, The Walking Dead just brings us back to zombie movie roots with an all-out serious tone and modern fear of living in an apocalyptic nightmare.

5. Character Development. Many modern action and horror films feature a strong lead role, but few can claim the vast array of character background that is witnessed in The Walking Dead.  Every character is forced to find their inner fighter in order to survive and the politics and conflicts of close relationships in an emergency are something we all might fantasize about, but rarely see depicted well on screen — most zombie flicks only scratch the surface of the self destruction and deterioration of relationships that can happen when people feel the onset of a doomed lifestyle. The best part is that, being a TV show with many episodes per season, we get to see the good and bad sides of every character and how their brain works…..before they get eaten.

4. Blood and Guts and Cuss-words, oh my! Due to the modern de-regulation of cable TV, moderate swearwords and violence are more prevalent. This may seem like a strange point to make if you don’t watch zombie movies or are used to judging a film by its level of appropriate picture and language….and if that was how you were, I would say you have no idea what a zombie movie is all about. But then, why does this deserve to be a point on this list? Because, while FX’s Rescue Me and Sons of Anarchy have been pushing the limits with language and nudity, AMC has taken the first step to be the first TV show to depict hacking a human skull in half with a shovel.  It’s not so much about the gore, it’s about the context of the gore:  the seriousness of the show, the lack of comedy, the TV network its on and thus the audience, the characters struggling to hold onto their former selves who are faced with having to hack dead people to bits….put them all together and a violent, gory scene actually becomes shocking and not laughable anymore.

3.  Character diversity. In The Walking Dead, we see men and women of all ages, shapes, sizes, colors and gender roles with strong appearances and roles, a feature of modern film making that is rarely carried out in horror films due to the tradition of the screaming, pretty girl and the black guy who gets killed before all the others.   In other zombie flicks, there are usually frail women who die fast (maybe even get nude first, which is easily avoidable on television), men with bad ideas, and kids with no voice.  But the Walking Dead, being the best zombie that it is, shows the perspective of almost every kind of person facing certain death at any moment, even a young son of the show’s main protagonist who is coming of age.

2. Zombie Herds! It’s not a new thing to see a giant mass of zombies crowding a house or something. But for them to migrate? A nice new twist to the epic apocalyptic zombie plot. The idea of zombies resembling animals is always hinted at but rarely explored in other movies.

SPOILER ALERT

1. An innate, unavoidable self-zombie doom. One of the staple characteristics of a zombie movie has always been that if you get bitten, you are doomed, but otherwise you’re ok.  In the season finale of The Walking Dead, it becomes known that everybody is sick

Top 10 zombie movies 2010

Time flies like an arrow. We are now in 2012. Although there are tonnes of zombie movies salted for release this year, even into 2013 (and I’m sure we will have some wonderful selections for our list of top 10 zombie movies 2013), zombie fanatics such as you and I still enjoy the classics from both the recent and not-so-recent past. There are actually a lot of zombie movies in the list of Top 10 zombie movies 2010 which many people highly recommend to watch from 2 years ago. Let’s see what are those top 10 zombie movies 2010 that on your must-watch list.

  1. Weed of The Living Dead
  2. L.A. Zombie
  3. Slices of Life
  4. Zone of The Dead
  5. The Dead Undead
  6. They Walk
  7. Survival of the Dead
  8. The Devil’s Playground
  9. The Crazies
  10. Resident Evil: Afterlife

No. 10, Weed of The Living Dead

A great one for the list of Top 10 zombie movies 2010 is this indie stoner pulp, Weed of the Living Dead. It centers on a couple of brothers who, after partaking in a favorite zombie film watcher pastime of extreme marijuana smoking, end up passing out in front of the TV while watching a broadcast of famous zombie pioneer George A. Ramero’s Night of the Living Dead on a local channel. They then awake to find themselves in the grainy black and white world of the film, and must fend off an army of zombies to make it through the night.

No. 9, L.A. Zombie

This movie is thus far one of its kind, for sure. Written and directed by gay porn director Bruce LaBruce, it stars gay porn star François Sagat as a man with schizophrenia who wanders around the streets of L.A. attempting to raise the dead by fucking dead bodies in the ass. Yes. You just read that.

L.A. Zombie

The controversy surrounding the film gives it a bit more credence to its position on the list of Top 10 zombie movies 2010. Since it was pornographic, it wasn’t rated, and since it wasn’t rated, it couldn’t be screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival since unrated films are forbidden from screening according to Australian film law. As artists tend to do, the filmmakers and friends at the parallel Melbourne Underground Film Festival decided to screen it anyway, and it led to a police raid of director Richard Wolstencroft’s home, finding nothing and being told the film had been destroyed after its initial screening. The film has since been shown in New Zealand with an R18 rating.

8. Slices of Life

While this isn’t entirely a zombie movie, there are plenty of elements of the undead in it. A sort of anthology that was filmed in segments, it took 4 years thus far to make this indie spotlighted horror film from indie horror filmmaker Anthony G Sumner. The trailer alone really wow’d the critics and it is actually still seeking distribution currently, but was officially completed in 2010.

The film features a young woman who wakes up with amnesia in front of a shady looking motel. She finds three notebooks that depict all sorts of horrors of every day life which is then played out in a sort of short-story, segmented way.

7. Zone of The Dead

Another great addition to the list of Top 10 zombie movies 2010 is Serbian horror film Zone of the Dead. While the movie was originally released in 2009, it was distributed in 2010. The beginning of the story starts by a bullet which got shot out from a group of people joking around and accidentally hit an abandon train full of highly toxic biochemicals which carried mutant virus. And the virus turns everyone into flesh-eating zombies.

6. The Dead Undead

When a small group of simple and peaceful vampires (the “good” vampires, perhaps) become infected with zombie venom, they turn into evil, more-undead creatures (like, more undead than just undead) whose only real motivation for anything is to feed on the flesh of the living and other immortal beings — each other! Meanwhile, a small group of vampire army guys trying to keep their own identities a secret and fight to limit the spread of the gnarly zombie infection. In the middle of all of this is a group of simple, human kids who are on a childhood camping trip but unwittingly find themselves teaming up with these Vampires in an attempt to survive.

5. They Walk

After a meteor shower strikes and a college couple disappears from a party, their friends go searching for them. What they find is the living dead, and the large group of friends split off into five separate groups, each with their own story of survival.

4. Survival of the Dead

Critics hated this movie, but as a George A Romero installment, it’s important to give it the #4 spot for historical purposes.
Top 10 zombie movies 2010

3. Devil’s Playground

The new medicine “RAK295” is used for improving humans immune system but failed. Thirty thousands of volunteers turned into super power zombies, except one girl, Angela. The medical company send out their head security guard tried to find her and get her blood sample for the antibiotic research.
Top 10 zombie movies 2010

2. The Crazies

A whole town starts going nuts and killing each other. This might be categorized as “almost zombies”, since the people are not actually undead, but they are zombies nonetheless. Timothy Olyphant is spectacular in this film.
Top 10 zombie movies 2010

1. Resident Evil: Afterlife

The fourth sequel of  ”Resident Evil” series, our super mutant heroine Alice faces even more challenges, along with some new monsters created by our favorite evil zombie birthing shadow antagonist company, Umbrella Corporation.

Top 10 zombie movies of all time

Have you ever had the feeling that every time when you watched zombie movies, there is always an atmosphere which make you feel that the end of the world is coming soon? I used to ask my parents and friends what would you do if the world that we’ve used to know is gone, and people are turning into zombies? The answer I got the most was, “that’s not gonna happen because there are no such things as zombies, they don’t exist.” Well, maybe my parents thought that I watched too many horror movies and that it made me get some twisted idea or something. However, I always viewed zombie movies as mere exaggerated imagination of the reality we actually live in, even if it is purely ridiculous. That’s why I have gotten into the Top 10 zombie movies of all time.

When it comes to the Top 10 zombie movies of all time, most of the story setting of zombie movies are about how there is some sort of unknown virus infecting people and causing the dead to be able to walk and eat the flesh. Now, not only are the dead people not getting their rest in peace, but have to suffer their second death again by the survivors as well as people who survived from the natural disaster who can’t get any peace either. These types of story lines are abundant in the Top 10 zombie movies of all time.

Looking some of the Top 10 zombie movies of all time, it shouldn’t be a surprise to any zombie movie fanatic that George A. Romero’s works are always taking up half of the spots in the list. From “Night of the Living Dead”, “Day of The Dead”, “Dawn of The Dead”, to “Land of The Dead” you can see that those zombies are not only evolved from low-speed flesh eaters to the fast moving monsters but also have intelligence too. In “Land of The dead” the zombies have intelligence, they can even communicate to each other as well.

Beginnings of the Top 10 zombie movies of all time

Before Peter Jackson filming “The Lord of The Ring”, he has a very classic noir zombie movie called “Braindead”(Dead Alive) in 1992. Peter Jackson used an ironic and humorous way to present the main character Lionel has a controlling freak mother who got bitten by a mutant “rat monkey” and turned into a zombie. Even though she dead, she is still not willing to give up her dictatorship to keep controlling her son’s life.

“Dellamorte Dellamore” (Cemetery Man) from Dario Argento protégé Michele Soavi, this zombie movie has become a genre favorite. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese even called the film as one of the best movies of the 1990s. So now you know it ain’t no joke. Rupert Everett plays the caretaker of a graveyard in the small town of Buffalora, Italy where the dead have been coming back to life. By day he tends the grounds and repairs tombstones, but by night he dispenses with the undead. This is a great movie in the list of the Top 10 zombie movies of all time.

“Zombie” (1979) Is one of the first zombie movies and shouldn’t be left out of the Top 10 Zombie Movies Of All Time list. It’s one of those movies that played a large role in the era of exploitation horror films of the 70s.

The story is about a guy who got divorce recently. His friends try to cheer him so they plan a trip to a remote town for a vacation. However, they can’t find any guy in the town, instead, they are all women who got some sort of weird decease and thirst to eat all the men.

*”Diary of The Dead”. Of course, how can you forget the classic zombie guru George A. Romero’s popular work “Diary of The Dead”? Unlike the other similar series from his hand, such as “Land of The Dead”, “Dawn of The Dead”, and “Night of The Dead”, George A. Romero set the story line to the very first beginning: the characters in the movie don’t have the concept about zombies. And the way of shooting is more like “The Blair Witch Project” (which we are glad isn’t in the Top 10 zombie movies on Netflix).
Top 10 zombie movies on Netflix

*”Resident Evil” series. Fans from both zombie movies and video game players are definitely highly recommended “Resident Evil” in the Top 10 zombie movies on Netflix. The first one released in 2002 and got incredibly feedback from massive audience. And because of the first one made a huge success, the team of the movie made the rest 3 sequels “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” “Resident Evil: Extinction” and “Resident Evil: Afterlife”. Although the story line of the movie is totally different from the video game, Milla Jovovich pulled it off the main character Alice and set up a female hero icon standard from it.

*”The Crazies”. Re-produced from George A. Romero’s classic zombie movie with the same name “The Crazies” in 1973. Unlike those bloody realistic scenery form most zombie movies, “The Crazies” doesn’t have so much bloody disgusting scene but it still has good record of box office. The story start from an airplane crash in a river of a mid-west country. The chemical waste on the airplane polluted the whole town and turned people into crazy flesh-eating zombies. It’s no wonder why it’s part of the Top 10 zombie movies on Netflix.

*”Fido”. This is a high recommended zombie movie from those zombie movie enthusiasts. The story is about there was an air pollution which caused dead people turning into zombies and eat people who still alive. And there was a company called ZomCon showed up and crashed most of the zombies back then and they also trained the zombies became house workers as part of the human resource. The style of the movie is like Peter Jackson’s “Dead Alive”. Sometimes only the dead people can make you understand the point of being alive. This is a must-see addition to the Top 10 zombie movies on Netflix.

*”The Signal”, This movie is a low cost film by 3 directors, David Bruckner, Dan Bush, and Jacob Gentry worked together to finish the whole story. The structure of the story may probably remind you about Stephen King’s work, “Cell”. The similar part of both movies is that the virus which caused people going crazy and turning into zombies is through a kind of mystery signal spread out through cell phones. The survivors are those who don’t use cell phones. The natural darkness of humans is present in front of audience’s naked eye and it makes you wonder who will be the scariest thing of the world, zombies or human beings? A great movie to be on the Top 10 zombie movies on Netflix list.

2. Deadheads

Another fairly new idea to hit the zombie world is the talking, interacting, and otherwise “normal person” zombie archetype which we see in Deadheads, which is about two who wake up in the middle of a full-on zombie apocalypse and then strangely make the decision to go on a road trip to find an old flame. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them, they are being tracked by agents of a ruthless company with it’s own agenda. A great addition to the list of Top 10 zombie movies 2011.

Intro to the Top 10 zombie movies

When it comes to the Top 10 zombie movies, the first impression you get must be, “Oh, that’s probably going to be another young adult movie, that’s all.” Unquestionably, the Top 10 zombie movies have always got the young audience’s attention but, thanks for the high-tech edition and high quality of film production in entertainment field, horror movies have a lot of potential to satisfy the audience’s taste nowadays. On the other hand, zombie movies are not just limited to young adult people any more. From movies to the TV shows (“The Walking Dead”), even the music video ( “Thriller” by Michael Jackson) from the 1980s, zombies have been popular characters in the world of horror movies for decades. We look over some of the most popular top 10 zombie movies here.

Some people see zombies as like an unfunny joke from God to human beings because in every zombie movie, even the top 10 zombie movies, the story lines are set up like when people died, they can’t lie down a get rest, instead, they walk around with their decomposed bodies and hunger for people who are still alive. Unlike other kinds of monsters like vampires or werewolves, they still have some sort of consciousness even though they are turning into something else, zombies in most of the movies don’t have any consciousness. That’s the scary part of the character: they look like humans, but they are not one of us anymore.

Undoubtedly, zombie movie series from the legendary zombie master George A. Romero are definitely on the must-watch list. Such as “Land of The Dead”, “Diary of The Dead”, “The Living Dead”, “Day of The Dead”, and “Dawn of The Dead”. “Dawn of The Dead” is the famous one that has been re-produced and filmed over the past 25 recent years. Unlike most directors of zombie movies who would like to introduce a new reason why people will turn into zombies or what is the cause of their turning,  the interesting part of the zombie stories from George A. Romero’s movies is that those living dead came from no where and no reason; it just happened. The famous quote from “Dawn of The Dead” is “When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.”

Other countries have different types of zombie movies as well. “28 Weeks Later” is one of the best top 10 zombie movies in 2011 that you must to watch, and like it’s predecessor “28 Days Later”, it’s also from England. “Dead Snow” by Tommy Wirkola from Norway is a noir zombie movie for those people who love watching a lot of bloody scenes.  And of course, one of the classic zombie movies  “Dead Alive” by Peter Jackson is absolutely in most people’s top 10 zombie movies list. “Dance of The Dead” is another top 10 zombie movies that is full of entertainment you would love to watch if you are a zombie fan.

Is there any movie that you haven’t watched before? Pick one and be prepared for the thrill tonight!
